An image looks stretched when its width and height are changed to a different proportion. Preserve the original aspect ratio, then decide whether the destination should crop, pad or simply fit the image.
Understand aspect ratio
Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height. A 1600×900 image and a 1920×1080 image share the same 16:9 ratio. Changing only one dimension while the ratio is locked calculates the other dimension automatically.
Use Fit for the complete image
Fit places the entire image inside the requested box. It does not crop or distort the photo, though one dimension may be smaller than the box when the proportions differ.
Use Fill when the box must be exact
Fill preserves proportions but crops the excess around the edges. Review the preview so an important face or subject is not removed. Crop deliberately first when you need precise control over the composition.
Use padding when nothing can be cropped
Padding keeps the complete image and fills unused space with a chosen background. This is useful for product images, logos and layouts that require an exact canvas size.
Export and inspect
Choose the output format and quality, download the resized copy, and inspect edges, text and faces. Keep the source file separately because enlarging the smaller export later cannot restore discarded detail.
