How to Make a Passport Photo at Home

You can prepare a passport-style photo at home when you have even lighting, a suitable background and a sharp front-facing portrait. Acceptance rules differ by country and application, so the issuing authority remains the final source.

Check the official requirements first

Before taking the photo, read the current instructions from the government or organization receiving it. Confirm dimensions, background, expression, head position, recency, glasses, shadows and whether digital alteration is allowed.

Take a clean portrait

Stand in even light facing the camera, with the lens near eye level. Use a plain background and avoid strong light from only one side. Leave space around the head and shoulders so the crop can be positioned accurately.

Choose the required preset

Open Passport Photo Maker, add the image and select the relevant country or document preset. Use Custom size only when the receiving authority provides dimensions that are not listed.

Align and inspect

Drag and zoom the portrait using the on-canvas guides. Check sharpness, natural color, eye position and headroom. If the application permits background replacement, enable Remove background, choose the required colour, and inspect hair and clothing edges at a useful zoom. Use Refine edges conservatively; if processing fails, keep the original portrait and try a clearer, better-lit photo.

Download and verify

Create the output, compare its dimensions and appearance with the official instructions, and keep the original. ImageGarage helps with sizing and layout; it cannot guarantee that an authority will accept a particular photograph.
